I met Shiva for lunch recently and we connected over wellness, rituals, challenging healing journeys, and later over making RAW RUFFLES. She is a gentle soul whose ethereal aura flows across all that she touches. Her stunning wellness site THE LOCAL ROSE, where her photos + words inspire + elevate always, has been an uplifting source for me for years. She has long been a trailblazer in beautiful, deeply rooted, authentic living + her daily full-being nourishment is steeped in ritual. So it was only a matter of time that she would be creating her own beauty line (more about this later in the week), which is nothing short of gorgeous and whose products have firmly cemented themselves on my bathroom countertops.
She is here with us today to share her wisdom and a bit more about her journey, inspiration, and how she stays balanced ::
PLEASE SHARE WITH US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO THE WELLNESS WORLD. WHAT WAS/WERE YOUR INSPIRATION/S.
I have always intuitively been on the path of wellness. As a young child I became very mindful of what I ate and the environment around me. It wasn’t though until I was diagnosed with a few serious auto immune conditions that I made more drastic changes in my life. I was 26 and just had given birth to my first daughter, when I was told by a traditional western doctor that I may only have a year to live due to lupus, sclerderma and RA. When I went to see a Sikh holistic doctor I was told I would start to feel better in a year. That sparked my passion for alternative medicine and also for helping our planet. I believe there is a direct correlation between how we are treating our mother earth and the diseases that are becoming more common among us. I am inspired by the beauty of mama earth, the practice of Kundalini, Ayurvedic teachings and good hearted people.
SHARE WITH US ABOUT HOW THE LOCAL ROSE + SHIVA ROSE BEAUTY LINE CAME TO BE.
The Local Rose Blog was what I started 6 years ago after my life broke open. I was recovering from a divorce, and trying to raise my daughters in an authentic manner. I craved a simple, connected, joyful life and getting close to mama nature gave me the solace I wanted. I began to document the recipes, spirituality, natural beauty and other paths that were healing me. I wanted to celebrate all the incredible artisans that I was meeting along the way. The Shiva Rose beauty line came to me as a download in a Kundalini Yoga meditation. I was already making my own skin care from oils for myself and got the vision to make it for others. I realized that many people were eating healthy, but still smothering their skin (our largest organ) with toxic chemicals. I wanted to bring light and beauty to the skin care market that carried the high vibrational teachings of my practice.
BALANCING RUNNING A BUSINESS AND STAYING PRESENT + CENTERED CAN BE QUITE CHALLENGING. WHAT DAILY RITUALS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLES TO HELP YOU MAINTAIN THAT BALANCE?
Oh yes the juggle to do it all is always a struggle! For me rituals are my fuel. I must start each day with my practices even if it means waking up earlier. I greet the Sun with my morning Kundalini meditation set. After that I will sit in quiet and gratitude with Living Tea Ceremony. This whole routine actually doesn’t take as long as you would think since it is now a part of my morning flow. Then I will get my daughter ready for school, feed the animals, and begin the day of work. In the early evening I will always take time for a beauty ritual. This has been so healing for me and a way to create self love. I will sometimes steam my face with botanicals like rose, calendula, nettle and mint. Then massage in my Rose Face Oil. I always will dry brush and then take a long bath.
DESCRIBE AN IDEAL DAY.
An ideal day would be to wake up with my morning practice but then be able to have Living Tea with my daughters or my sisters in the community. Then to make a beautiful, nutritious breakfast harvested from my garden with produce, honey from my bees and eggs from my chickens or loved ones. We then would take a family hike with our dog Luna to the canyons behind my house. The rest of the day would be about being with family and friends singing songs and cooking in the kitchen. If its a work day then working in my studio creating products. If we are on holiday then swimming the sea until we are exhausted.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL BREAKFAST? LUNCH? DINNER? SNACK?
A typical breakfast for me is raw goat yogurt with granola by Real Food Devotee. This is a paleo granola made of seeds. To this I add blueberries and other fruit in season. A typical lunch is over night soaked nuts, a salad or quinoa dish. A smoothie sometimes is perfect too. I also will eat a avocado, sun food olives and feta cheese. A snack for me is usually fruit and raw cacao. I love a Sun Potion Tonic in the afternoon with Zen Bunni Chocolate. A typical dinner at home is roasted vegetables in coconut oil, quinoa, bean soups sometimes prepared in bone broth. If I am out for dinner I will live a bit wildly and eat pasta, bread and dessert. As much as I love to eat healthy, I also feel we can’t become too obsessive and we must live in the world.
Favorite beverage is tart cherry concentrated mixed in natural Spring water harvested by my friend Mukhunde. I also love Rosewater and hibiscus tea which is the Goddess beverages. (Lakshmi and Parvati). I also will make a big mason jar of nettle tea and red clover to keep my hormones balanced and skin and hair healthy.
WHAT IS YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE INDULGENCE?
Chocolate for sure dark and raw!
WHERE IS/ARE YOUR MOST FAVORITE PLACE/S TO BE ON THIS EARTH?
I have been going to the isle if Kauai since I was 15 and it always nourishes me with its abundance of sacred waters and green mountains. For a quick getaway Ojai always does the trick.
WHAT OTHER BEAUTY, FITNESS, OR WELLNESS GURUS INSPIRE YOU?
I am inspired and filled up by my Kundalini Classes taught by Guru Jagat or Harijiwan both at Rama Yoga. I also get so much wisdom and inspiration from my sisters like Baelyn with her Tea ceremonies, Mijanou Mystic Mama with her astrological reports, Amy Daughter of the Sun with her retreats, Vandana Shiva with her noble fight to save our seeds and planet.
PLEASE SHARE WITH US A FAVORITE BEAUTY SECRET OR TIP.
Favorite beauty tip is to meditate and be in gratitude since this shows up on your face. I also try to get enough healthy fats like ghee, butter, coconut oil. This obsession with being thin can dry women out and create aging effects. I also think we need to show our yonis some attention with certain oils and meditations since this is connected with our feminine beauty and wisdom.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MANTRA?
So many! Everything by Yogi Bhajan. This is my favorite today:
"If a woman sits with folded hands in her lap for a few minutes every day, and feels she is a container so vast that she contains the whole Universe, she will never feel weak or have any problems. There is nothing beyond woman except God."
WHAT IS THE LATEST BOOK ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?
I have about a dozen books on Ayurvedic teachings right now.
SHARE WITH US 3 SONGS ON YOUR CURRENT PLAYLIST.
I always have mantras playing in my house. If I need a break and want to dance about I put on Led Zeppelin. From mantras to Zeppelin two different worlds but that’s me! We all need some spiritual love and yet we must stay wild at heart!
